Preserving Historic Local Architecture

Since 1967, Heritage Homes has celebrated Petaluma's historic architecture and cultural legacy. Staffed solely by volunteers, our organization serves as an active community voice in the preservation and restoration of vintage buildings and landmarks unique to Petaluma.

Some of the contributions to our community include:

  • Increasing the public's interest, knowledge and appreciation of our architectural and historic legacy.
  • Identifying and preserving historical buildings and researching their history.
  • Providing renovation inspiration, resources and guidelines for residential and commercial buildings.
  • Adding to the charm of downtown Petaluma through donations of labor and materials for local projects.
  • Designation of historic districts in Petaluma.
  • Financial and material support to the Petaluma Historical Library & Museum and historic archives.
  • Support of the grassroots organization working to restore the Petaluma Trestle (originally built for the Petaluma Trolley). In past years, Heritage Homes covered the fees for qualified engineers to assist with the city's application for the trestle restoration grant.
  • Granting over 320 Preservation Awards for outstanding preservation work on historic structures.
  • Aiding City Offices when making decisions that affect historic resources and holding a seat on the Historic Planning Commission.
  • Planning and orchestrating our Biennial House Tours and our Annual Holiday Parlour Tours to raise funds for preservation efforts.
  • Providing "Heritage Home" brass plaques to our biennial tour homes.
  • Providing financial grants to other non-profit organizations to benefit local historical preservation projects.
  • Sponsoring instructive sessions to teach Petalumans how to help preserve their historic buildings and research the history of their properties.
